There are customs and traditions that end up in popular culture. This is the case of the Espinaler tavern in Vilassar de Mar, founded in 1896. In the 1950s it left the wine world to focus on "conservas". The perseverance and entrepreneurial mindset of its descendants, allowed Espinaler to be a distribuitor of food, distinguished by its own sauce, as well as an icon of popular culture and customs in Catalonia. Anthony Bourdain, from "No Reservations" of the Discovery Travel and Living channel visited barcelona and stopped by Espinaler.
He tasted a wide range of seafoof tapas and other specialities of the house. The video was issued by the Discovery Travel Channel in the U.S. Anthony was surprised to find such a variety of canned seafood in the same establishment, as normally only one or two types of seafood are well-known, depending on the country. Anthony realised the long tradition of making the appetizer with canned seafood in Catalonia.
The stores of Vilassar de Mar, Espinaler, Roca Pharmacy, Almera Pharmacy and Can Manel´s butcher shop have received the award for 2009, wihch is given to all business centenarians by the Generalitat, as a reward for their continued business career for over a century.
The event was held at the Pedralbes Palace on 2nd July, which was attended by counsellor Huguet.
Miquel, Joan Tapias and his father, along with their wives, were present to receive the award.
On 3rd July, U2 singer Bono visited the tavern to try our products. When he was recognised, he took some pictures with the locals of Vilassar de Mar. Bono was staying at Llvaneras during his two concerts in Barcelona and he was recommended to visit Espinaler, a typical place in the Maresme region.
